What Is an A2 Licence?

An A2 licence is a category of motorcycle licence in the UK that allows riders to operate medium-sized bikes with a maximum power output of 35kW (47bhp). To obtain an A2 licence, individuals must be at least 19 years old and pass both a practical riding test and a theory test.

The practical riding test consists of two parts: an off-road module and an on-road module. During the off-road module, riders are required to demonstrate their bike control skills in a controlled environment, which involves carrying out various manoeuvres such as slow-speed riding, the figure of eight and emergency stop exercises. Once they have successfully completed this section of the test, they can progress onto the on-road module, where they will ride through traffic for around 40 minutes whilst being assessed by an examiner.

A2 licences are perfect for individuals who want a bike that is more powerful than a 125cc yet less intimidating than larger bikes. With this licence category, you have access to some great models like the Honda CBR500R or Kawasaki Ninja 400 that provide enough power and torque while still being easy to handle. The A2 licence is also ideal if you’re looking at upgrading from your current motorcycle but don’t want anything too overwhelming.

It’s worth noting that after holding your A2 licence for two years (or if you turn 24 before then), you can upgrade it to a full category A licence which allows you to operate any size of motorcycle without restriction – meaning there’s no need to retake your test! All in all, obtaining an A2 Licence opens up new opportunities and experiences within motorcycling whilst providing greater freedom on UK roads.
